The bow is a simple yet genius invention to store muscle energy and transform that energy into a speeding arrow. That principle is the same regardless if we compare a modern compound bow or a longbow of ancient model. In the archery sport there are mainly three types of bows represented, the compound bow, the recurve bow and the traditional longbow. These types of bows are also used in bow hunting where the compound bow is the most popular due to its ease of use and ability to generate exceptional arrow speed. The Recurve bow is the bow used in the Olympics and it as also sometimes called the Olympic bow.
Other types of bows are traditional bows like the Japanese Yumi, used in Kyudo, a Japanese form of archery. The Flatbow belongs to another group of bows mainly represented by the native North American bows and the modern American Flatbow developed in the 1930s. The Olympic Recurve bow is a development from the American Flatbow.
